THE WIZARD OF OZ Celebrates 80 Years of Magic

The immortal MGM classic THE WIZARD OF OZ turns 80 this year!

Based on the beloved novel by L. Frank Baum and featuring songs by Harold Arlen and E. Y. Harburg, the technicolor film premiered at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre on August 15, 1939. Starring Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, Bert Lahr, Billie Burke, and Margaret Hamilton, the movie musical opened to critical acclaim and achieved legendary status through decades of annually televised broadcasts.

Tams-Witmark proudly licenses three versions of THE WIZARD OF OZ:

1. THE WIZARD OF OZ (R.S.C. 1987)

Faithfully adapted from the MGM film, this full-length version features all the classic characters, dialogue, and songs that audiences have cherished for generations.

The first stage adaptation to include the score from the movie musical, this full-length version uses the novel as its source, and features additional characters like Gloria and Lord Growlie.

3. THE WIZARD OF OZ (Young Performers’ Edition)

This one-hour adaptation of the R.S.C. Version is specially tailored for elementary and middle school-aged actors.

No matter which version you choose, you can join the 80th Anniversary celebration by bringing THE WIZARD OF OZ home to your school or theatre in 2019!
