On February 19, 2017 at 8:00pm, Manhattan Concert Productions (MCP) will present a 25th Anniversary concert performance of the Gershwin’s Tony Award-winning musical comedy. The concert at David Geffen Hall will feature Harry Groener, who starred in the original Broadway production in 1992, along with Tony Yazbeck, Laura Osnes, and a cast of Broadway and television luminaries.
Five-time Tony Award winner Susan Stroman, who won her first Tony for choreographing CRAZY FOR YOU on Broadway, returns to direct and choreograph this special one-night-only event. Broadway veteran Kevin Stites, current music director and principal conductor of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, serves as music director and conductor.
The MCP concert performance will feature a chorus of 240 singers from across the United States, all supported by the expanded forces of the New York City Chamber Orchestra.
CRAZY FOR YOU, based on the 1930 musical GIRL CRAZY, features music and lyrics by George and Ira Gershwin, with a hilariously updated book by Ken Ludwig. The score includes the glorious Gershwin standards “I Got Rhythm,” “Someone To Watch Over Me,” “Embraceable You,” “But Not For Me,” and “They Can’t Take That Away From Me,” among many others.
A zany boy-meets-girl romantic comedy, CRAZY FOR YOU tells the story of young banker Bobby Child (Yazbeck), who dreams of dancing in the Follies produced by showbiz kingpin Bella Zangler (Groener). Bobby’s disapproving mother sends him to Deadrock, Nevada, to foreclose on a rundown theatre. In Deadrock, Bobby meets local gal Polly Baker (Osnes), the theater owner’s daughter, and he is immediately smitten. Polly takes an instant dislike to the city slicker, however, so Bobby vows – through deceit, cunning, and some very funny instances of mistaken identity – to win Polly’s heart and save the theatre.
The star-studded supporting cast includes Crazy Ex-Girlfriend creator Rachel Bloom as Irene Roth, SNL/30 Rock comedians Rachel Dratch and Jack MacBrayer as Patricia and Eugene Fodor, Tony nominee Nancy Opel as Lottie Child, Perfect Strangers star Mark Linn-Baker as Everett Baker, and film and TV star Jerry O’Connell as Lank Hawkins. The full cast is credited below.
