Titanic Melbourne 2016 StagArtHere’s what critics had to say:

Simon Parris, Man In Chair:
“Reconfigured as a chamber musical for 20 performers and six musicians, 1997 Best Musical Tony Award winner TITANIC makes for a dream boutique production. StageArt has raised the bar again, presenting a superb cast, highly intelligent direction, beautiful music and creative, immersive staging.

“Musical director Kent Ross delivers an excellent performance of the rather epic score, with well-balanced harmonies and crisp instrumental accompaniment. Each of the twenty talented performers shines in their featured moments, and the combined strength of the cast in ensemble scenes is even greater than the sum of their individual gifts.

“Music theatre lovers are strongly urged to make the most of this opportunity to see and enjoy TITANIC The Musical.”

“TITANIC’s characters get to your soul. Their hope and optimism lets you believe things might be okay. Of course, we know that it won’t be. That’s what makes StageArt’s TITANIC so triumphant. It pulls at your heartstrings with well-rounded characters and elegant music.

“TITANIC is intense from the moment it starts, and most of the actors remain on stage or visible the entire time. The majority of the ensemble portray multiple characters and Lucy Laurita’s costumes, combined with accents, create an era-appropriate and seamless transition between these roles.

“Director James Cutler has certainly raised the bar again for StageArt productions with Titanic. This creative team has constructed a truly pristine and powerful production. It tells a formidable story of potent hope followed by utter anguish. It’s difficult to describe or imagine the depth of the destruction, but StageArt’s production of TITANIC certainly makes you feel it as much as possible.”

“Stage Art’s production of the Australian premiere of TITANIC: The Musical breathes new life into the story, creating a gloriously entertaining show that should not be missed.

“Peter Stone‘s story and book develop elegantly and organically: even with such a large number of characters, every single person has a clear and distinctive story arc or motivation. The music and lyrics by Maury Yeston are wonderfully brought to life by the highly talented band and singers under the proficient musical direction of Kent Ross.

“TITANIC: The Musical is a gripping and entertaining story that reaches far beyond the familiar historical narrative we thought we knew. Already halfway through 2016, it is fair to say that this will emphatically be one of the best musicals, if not one of the best shows, of the year.”
